HHII Seeks Insurance Transparency Unlike in other states, the Alabama Department of Insurance doesn't comply with public information expectations. It refused to give State Senator Pittman the amount of actual claims made on a county-by-county basis following Hurrican Ivan. It won't give this information to HHII families. It won't release the acturial model it uses. Ridling, who is Alabama's Insurance Commissioner, told Fox 10 news reporter Bob Grip that his department can't distribute rate or claims information it doesn't collect. "It's not that we refuse to give them. We don't have them. Never have had them. The Department's never required companies to report on that basis, so that the information didn't exist." One insurance company source said 65% of claims after Hurricane Ivan actually came from north of Mobile and Baldwin counties! Without this claims information it is impossible to understand the justification for recent dramatic increase in insurance premiums and thousands of dropped policies.
